Social and Personal Development

Personal development includes knowing name and age, eventually learning address, phone number and birth dates, caring for one’s own physical needs, separating from parent with increasing ease and learning to respect oneself and others as well as the belongings of both.

Social development at our preschool includes cooperative play, sharing, following directions, and conversation skills with peers and adults, and respect for the legitimate authority of teachers and other adults.

Special Events and Occasions. Parents are invited to join our Pre-K students for birthdays and holiday parties. We also have lots of visits from our community leaders --police, fire fighters, and of course, grandparents! Our Grandparents Club meets a few times a year. We also have an active PTA and Room Parents Association, which helps support our school family.

Speech, Language, and Motor Skill Development

Speech and Language development at the early childhood level includes listening, speaking and thinking. Learning experiences that promote self-understanding help the child express thoughts and feelings in various ways. Visual discrimination and memory, and auditory discrimination and memory are important readiness skills that can be taught through play activities. Stories, songs, and poetry will enhance the love and use of good language skills.

Fine and gross motor skills  are developed through large muscle activities such as running, walking, hopping and jumping. Throwing, catching, rhythm, and movement are also part of the organized play for the development of these skills. Fine motor skills include exercises in pasting, stringing, coloring, painting, pouring, lacing, scissors, as well as the use of technology.

Play is a very necessary tool for the child’s learning process. Opportunities for play will occur as soon as the child enters the room and after structured learning activities. Outdoor play will be part of the daily schedule when weather is cooperative. Our Pre-K students also experience gym class on a weekly basis.

Science, Technology, Engineering, Math

Mathematics instruction includes exploration using concrete materials. Knowledge also comes from understanding of colors, shapes and quantitative concepts such as size differences, basic counting skills through practical application, classifying, forming sets and recognizing numerals. Workbooks and worksheets are inappropriate for math instruction at this level.

Engineering and Problem Solving. It's never too early to test and try again! STEM class is held once a week, focusing on creative construction and thinking outside-the-box to solve small challenges, like making puppets, landing a race car on a target, or building without blocks. Students also discover the natural world through learning about stars and constellations, nature walks, and family field trips!

Tech time is also part of the weekly schedule for pre-kindergarten students. During technology class, preschool students are introduced to STEM related activities, problem solving challenges, and develop fine motor skills as they relate to the use of the mouse, touch screens, and tablets. Learn more about our district-leading Pre-K through 8 STEM program by clicking here.

Early Learning Enhancement

Music. Preschool music involves learning songs and notes, following directions, and lots of dancing and imagination! Preschoolers perform alongside our whole student body at our school Christmas and Spring Concerts!

Visual Arts. We encourage art as an individual expression of the child, as well as a reinforcement tool for cross-curricular learning. Students create with paper and mixed media, and manipulate clay. Students will bring home lots of art projects!

Social-Emotional Learning. This is a program designed to help our students learn more about themselves, their emotions, and how to interact with others with kindness and respect. SEL begins in Pre-K 3 and continues through 8th grade, focusing on a different theme with age-appropriate activities every week.

Physical Education. Preschoolers have gym class once per week, getting outside as much as possible. They warm up with a good stretch and then get moving with some fun, teamwork-focused play.

Independence. Students also learn basic hygiene, dental hygiene, and their parents names and addresses. We also practice sharing and waiting our turn.

Religious instruction

At our Little Saints Preschool, religious instruction begins with instilling the concept that God is Love Students are introduced to basic Catholic prayers and traditions, such as the Rosary, and the Mass. Classroom prayer and prayer celebrations that follow the Catholic liturgical year are a part of the curriculum as are many Bible stories and songs for the children’s enjoyment.
