Music Program
Music is the medicine of the mind. ~ John A. Logan
Music in the Classroom
Students K through 8th grade participate in General Music Class once a week. Instructed by Michael Hak, the class involves a variety of ways for students to experience the fine art of music. Throughout the year, students learn while developing musical skills such as singing, movement, improvisation, music notation, and performing music. A variety of percussion and tonal instruments are available and utilized by the students. Fun and enlightening lesson plans are aimed to kindle students’ interest and develop their knowledge and awareness of multicultural music.
Christmas Musical
An entertaining addition to the music program is the St. Peter School Christmas Musical. This is a sizable event that involves the entire school. Singing, acting, and dance are all incorporated into this spiritual drama performance. Each class works hard with their teachers to perfect their class-song and dance, while soloists and speaking parts stay after school for practices held by Mr. Hak. The students’ hard work and dedication pays off in the end with an exciting performance! The Christmas musical has proven to be quite entertaining for family and friends to watch, and a very positive experience for the students.
Band / Instrumental Instruction
Students in grades 4 through 8 have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and perform in the school band. This program, directed by John Spangenberg, is an excellent way for students to further their growth in music. As they enter the program, students may chose from a variety of wind and percussion instruments. Both the Beginner Band and the Advanced Band work very hard during the school year in preparation for a winter and spring concerts. The students strive to perfect their skills individually, as they learn to blend together as a group and develop into skilled young musicians.
Children’s Choir
Directed by Ms. Pegi Barracliffe and Ms. Joan Judd, the Children's Choir gives students the opportunity to use their voices in praise and adoration to God. The choir performs at Sunday Mass as well as the Mass on Fridays when the whole school is in attendance. The choir provides a wonderful and youthful sound to the Mass and also displays the student’s individual ability to lead and sing solo. Singing in this ensemble has proven to be a highly spiritually rewarding experience for the students.
