Role, Purpose, Function
The consultative school board is an organization whose members are selected to participate in the school’s policy making process by formulating and recommending but never enacting policy. This type of board is in keeping with shared decision making in the Catholic Church because, according to Canon Law, those in pastor can delegate power, but they cannot delegate their ultimate responsibilities.
Consultation implies that the pastor and the Principal will listen to the advice of the board in designated matters prior to a decision being made. The operating principle is that the pastor will not act contrary to the advice the board gives, especially when there is a consensus, unless the pastor has an overriding reason. In such cases the pastor should communicate this reason.
The role of the Catholic School consultative school board is to provide policy direction to the school. This responsibility includes eight (8) distinct functions: strategic planning, policy development and support, financial advice, constituent relations, institutional advancement, board evaluation, principal selection, personnel policy. |
